Why Workplace Flexibility Is No Longer Negotiable

You need to give your employees freedom

Millennials have revolutionized the way we think about work. As they rise through the ranks of the workforce, they’re demanding and making changes to corporate America—changes that prioritize the well-being of people, not just the accrual of profits.

Flexibility is one of those things that, as more and more people start to demand it, has become more widespread in offices. Some workplaces (like yours truly) no longer consider it a perk, but a necessity. In fact, Profresh Podcast covered this topic at length when Kristen, Profresh host and HDco founder, and Kristi, HDco’s chief of strategy + business development, sat down to talk.

“With that flexibility, knowing that you can put your child first, and still be working, and still be successful, and not have that stress, is huge,” says Kristi, a working mom and total boss.

Workplace flexibility is important for all aspects of business, from profits to people. We’re going to break a few of these aspects down.

Happier Employees

Flexibility allows for a better work/life balance, letting employees make time for family, travel, and appointments. These things help employees be happier, healthier, and in turn, more productive. Flexibility shows that you trust your people to get the job done, even if it’s on their schedule. It also fosters a healthier workplace culture, ensuring that employees are engaged and challenged when they’re on the clock. Flexibility has become so important that nearly 40% of job candidates across the world ranked it as one of their top three considerations when taking a job, according to a study by Manpower Group Solutions.

Better Business

But workplace flexibility isn’t just a personnel issue; it’s a business one, too. By offering flexibility, you’re better able to attract and retain top talent. You also get happier customers who are more likely to buy from you again and again, based on their interaction with satisfied and fulfilled employees. Offering flexibility allows you to take steps toward addressing diversity, inclusion, and gender equity because you recognize that minority and underrepresented groups in the workplace have unique needs. And as a bonus, your company can be perceived as thoughtful, innovative, and caring, boosting your brand reputation.

At HDco, flexibility is a must for everyone, but it’s not a one-way street. Everyone is expected to get their work done on time, working late if necessary. But the bottom line is that we’re all much happier and able to find not just work/life balance, but work/life harmony, because of the flexibility we’re afforded at work.
